Each year, artificial swarms and queens are reared for the needs of the apiaries of Åland Honey but also for the needs of the local and neighbouring countries. All Åland Honey beehives use wood frames in the Langstroth 3/4 format (also called farrar). To rear our queens, our queen cells are introduced into artisanal Kieler-type nuclei, made from Åland pine. The nucleis are placed in the Åland Honey apiaries guaranteeing mating in an environment saturated with selected males. Mated queen of the year
Queen Apis Melifera ”Alandica” (unofficial name) is available from June until the end of August depending on weather and availability. The queens are fertilized in a male-saturated environment of Åland Honey hives and are selected for their softness and productivity.
