About us

Åland Honey is a Beekeeping Company managed by Benoit Leroux (Ben). It was founded in 2019 on the Åland archipelago, a collection of islands in the middle of the Baltic Sea between Turku, Finland, and Uppsala, Sweden. The island’s climate, warmer than in mainland Finland, is favourable to local bees, which are free from varroa mites (a parasite that weakens bee colonies). The variety of biotopes present on the Åland archipelago is unique in the world, ranging from taiga to flowery pastures and fir forests. Thanks to the low industrialization of the Åland landscape and reasoned agricultural practices, our bees primarily forage wild flowers in a pollution-free environment between the summer months from May through to August.

Åland Honey operates around 50 colonies spread over 5 to 8 apiaries between Sund and Mariehamn. Each year, when conditions allow it, sumptuous honeys such as linden honey, heather honey, and of course summer honey flow from these apiaries. Sweets filled with Åland honey and various products from the beehives are also offered throughout the year. For Åland Honey, honey is considered an exceptional local product depending on the geographical location, the annual climate and the health of its bees. This is why Åland Honey wants you to appreciate its honey and bee products at their true value. More information on Åland Honey beehive products: Honey and bee products

Every summer, Åland Honey raises queens for local needs. The Åland bees are a blend of Buckfast bees and Apis Melifera Ligustica bees which were imported from Sweden in the 1980s. Today their common name could be Apis Melifera Alandica. The queens of Åland Honey are selected mainly for their sweetness and low attractiveness to swarming. The queen cells are introduced into artisanal nuclei (beehives and Åland wooden frames) of the Kieler type and are naturally fertilized in an environment saturated with males of Åland Honey hives. There can be 50 to 200 queens bred each season. Find out more about Åland Honey bee and queen farming: Bees and Queens

The bees of Åland, are so far free of the Varroa Destructor parasite. To maintain this status validated by the EU, samples are taken each year from the archipelago’s apiaries and examined by a veterinary laboratory in Finland. This status ensures the total absence of chemicals in the beehives of the Åland archipelago. This gives Åland Honey unparalleled purity.
